Dr. Stanislav Grof M.D. and Ph.D, psychiatrist originally from Prague with over six decades of experience, is a leading figure and renowned expert in the study of non-ordinary states of consciousness. Held positions at Johns Hopkins University, where he advanced research on psychedelic substances for clinical use. At the beginning of 1970s in Esalen Institute, with his former wife Christina, they developed holotropic breathwork, today Grof® Breathwork. His contributions have made him a pivotal figure in psychology, especially in exploring consciousness , LSD therapy,  and transpersonal experiences. Stan authored or co-authored over 20 books and more than 160 articles in professional journals. with translations available in 22 language

1. What exactly is breathwork and how does it work?

2. Is it safe for me, considering my age or any medical conditions?

Yes. Age itself is never a limitation for breathwork — I have worked with clients across the whole spectrum of life. What matters most is your specific health situation. There are some contraindications, such as certain cardiovascular issues, epilepsy, glaucoma, recent surgeries, or severe psychiatric conditions. That’s why the most important part of the process is to stay in open communication with me about each point of your health history. Often, I also collaborate with other health professionals to create an integral and holistic support.

Pregnancy is not always a contraindication. I have guided clients through breathwork during pregnancy, always with a very gentle and conscious style of breathing, and only when they already have prior experience with me in their process. In those cases, it can be deeply supportive in this stage of life. Otherwise, we can always use different approaches. For new breathers, it is best to wait until after pregnancy to begin.

3. What kinds of experiences might I have during a session?

During a breathwork session, people can access a wide range of experiences, as the mind and body naturally move through different levels of awareness. You may notice physical sensations, such as tingling, warmth, or waves of energy. Emotional releases are common — feelings of joy, sadness, relief, or even catharsis can arise spontaneously.

Some people revisit memories or experiences from their past, while others may encounter symbolic or visionary imagery that can feel deeply meaningful. At times, you may experience a profound sense of connection — with yourself, with others, or with something larger than yourself.

Every session is unique, and there is no “right” or “wrong” experience. The practice allows the body and mind to move through what needs attention in a safe and supportive environment, integrating insights, emotions, and sensations in a holistic way.

4. Do I need any previous experience and special preparation?

No previous experience is needed to participate in breathwork. The most important preparation is your openness and willingness to explore your inner world with curiosity and intention.

We can work by setting a clear intention for your session, or we can simply allow the psyche to move wherever it needs to go, without guidance — offering a safe and supportive container for whatever arises. The practice is about creating space for your own process to unfold naturally, in a gentle and respectful way.

5. What do I need to bring or prepare for a breathwork session?

For a regular breathwork session, you don’t need to bring much — just a few simple things to make your experience comfortable:

  • Comfortable clothing that allows you to move and breathe freely.
  • A bottle of water to stay hydrated before and after the session. I will offer tea.
  • A small blanket or shawl if you feel chilly or want extra comfort while lying down that you prefer. Otherwise I have too.
  • Optional personal items that help you feel grounded or safe, such as a journal, a small pillow, or an eye mask.

Most importantly, come with an open mind and a willingness to explore your inner experience. No special skills are required — the session is designed to provide a safe, supportive container for whatever arises in your body and mind.
